Traffic checks continue regularly
In recent days, several fines have been issued for driving without valid insurance, driving without a valid driver's license, holding a cell phone while driving, and driving without a seatbelt.
Seat Belt
Wear your seatbelt for your own safety. A seatbelt protects you in the event of an accident. By wearing a seatbelt, the occupant remains in their seat, preventing their skull from hitting the windshield and preventing them from being thrown around the car. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of a fatal accident by 30 to 40%. Wearing seatbelts also reduces the risk of serious injury by 20% in the back of the car.
Phone
Using your mobile phone while driving puts you and others at risk. When we use our phones, we are less alert. Keep your smartphone out of sight. This way, you won't be tempted to take a quick look. When participating in traffic, whether by car or bicycle, it's important to be present. If someone is expecting a message or phone call, for example, inform them before getting in the car that you're temporarily unavailable.
Valid Documents
KPCN wants to remind everyone to have the necessary documents listed above in order. Adhering to the rules of the traffic regulations is also strongly advised. This also contributes to traffic safety on the island. Regular checks will be conducted in the coming period, and strict action will be taken if you don't have the above-mentioned documents in order or if you don't comply with the traffic regulations.
If you don't comply with the rules, you may receive a fine. The fine for the above-mentioned violations ranges from $30 to $225.
Enjoy, but drink responsibly
The weekend is almost here. KPCN wants to remind you to drink alcohol in moderation when participating in traffic. This way, you avoid unpleasant situations for yourself and others. It is prohibited to participate in traffic if you have consumed more than the legal limit of alcohol. Whether you have to go to the police station and receive a fine depends on the result of your breath test.
Breath Test
The police use a breath test to check whether you are under the influence of alcohol. You are required to submit to the breath test. This test indicates whether you have consumed more than the legal limit. The result of this test determines whether you have to go to the police station for further investigation. If you refuse, the police will issue a report. Depending on the result of the breath test, you will have to go to the station for a breath analysis. During this test, the police use special equipment to measure exactly how much alcohol you have consumed.
Driving under the influence of alcohol? You will receive a fine, a (temporary) driving ban, a prison sentence, or a combination of these penalties. The penalty depends on the severity of the situation. If you are involved in an accident, you will be subject to a breathalyzer test as standard practice, in accordance with the "crash, blow" policy.
Am I liable to prosecution as a pedestrian if I'm drunk?
Yes, you are. The police can issue a report for public intoxication. If the police find you drunk, they will rely on the outward signs of intoxication and your behavior. In such cases, the police will not administer a breathalyzer test.
KPCN wishes everyone a pleasant and safe weekend!
