On Monday, the 17th of August 2026, the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of colleague, friend and police officer Ferry Bakx. Exactly ten years ago, Ferry lost his life in the line of duty.
During a memorial ceremony at the police station, Deputy Chief of Police Rob Meijer reflected on the lasting impact of his loss. As a tribute, a new memorial plaque was unveiled, a minute of silence was observed and colleagues laid roses in his memory.
On the 17th of August 2016, Ferry Bakx responded to a call while on duty, committed to helping others and keeping Bonaire safe. He never made it home that night.
“Today, we remember not only what happened that evening. Above all, we remember Ferry as a colleague and as a person. Someone colleagues worked with, laughed with, shared shifts with and shared many experiences with. Our thoughts are also with his family and loved ones today. For them, the 17th of August is not simply a date in the history of our police force. The loss of Ferry remains a part of their lives,” said Rob Meijer.
During the ceremony, a new memorial plaque was unveiled inside the police station. It has been placed in a central location where colleagues pass by every day, helping to keep Ferry’s memory alive.
Although ten years have now passed and many new colleagues never had the opportunity to know Ferry personally, the leadership of the Force emphasized that his name will forever remain part of the history of the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force.
